Tenzin Palmo (born Diane Perry) is a Tibetan Buddhist nun who converted to Buddhism at 18, and after moving from her native England to India at 20, became the second western woman to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun. After training as a Buddhist nun, she spent 12 years in a cave in the remote Himalayan mountains in meditation and prayer. When she emerged in 1988 she began to travelling around the world advocating for equal rights and opportunities for Buddhist women. In 2000 she opened a Buddhist nunnery in India to educate and train women from Tibet and the Himalayas.
